Hotels Own Introduction
Endsleigh: A Garden Paradise with a Rich History
Endsleigh was commissioned by the captivating and controversial Georgina, Duchess of Bedford. Married to one of the wealthiest men in the country and the muse of painter Edwin Landseer, Georgina’s world revolved around her beloved Endsleigh, which became known as 'The Garden Paradise of the West.'
Elegance and Individuality
Each of Endsleigh’s 21 rooms is individually designed with a blend of uncluttered elegance and distinctive character. The furniture is an eclectic mix of old and new, with unique pieces that add charm to the space. Delightful touches, such as the duchess's thatched dairy and a little house in the woods—built solely to release a wisp of smoke from the treetops each morning—add whimsy to the landscape.
Timeless Beauty and Scottish Charm
Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a vibrant vase of garden flowers in the hall. As you explore the hotel and take in its breathtaking views, it’s no surprise that the Duke of Bedford chose this spot from across a third of Devon. The Scottish influence comes from Georgina, the Duke's second wife, who hailed from Highland nobility and fell in love with the valley. Artisans and tradesmen were brought in to craft a faux Scottish landscape, creating a cozy retreat reminiscent of Georgina’s childhood.
A Retreat to Get Lost In
Two centuries later, this Grade I listed building is surrounded by vast forests filled with fairy dells, caves, and waterfalls—an ideal setting for a peaceful escape. Inside, the house offers countless cozy nooks perfect for reading, while the library, stocked with everything from Zadie Smith to PG Wodehouse, is a reader’s haven.
Afternoon Tea Tradition
At 3:30pm daily, indulge in freshly baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, cakes, and finger sandwiches. As the scent of wood smoke draws you back to the house, it marks the highlight of each day—a tradition as comforting as it is delicious.
