The Spirit of the Maasai Mara

Set high on the slopes of the Oloolaimutia Hills, Masai Mara Sopa Lodge is one of the original safari lodges in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, giving its gardens and mature trees a wonderfully established character. The lodge follows the architectural traditions of the region, with individual buildings inspired by classic African round houses and distinctive conical roofs. Arranged along the hillside, they surround the impressive central public areas and swimming pool, creating a relaxed retreat immersed in the landscape.

A Warm Welcome at the Bars

The lodge’s bars each offer their own distinctive atmosphere. The Jumbo Bar is a convivial gathering place, with a free-form counter decorated with cowrie shells and beads, softly illuminated shelves of spirits and exceptionally comfortable seating. It is an inviting spot to gather with family or friends before or after dinner.

Overlooking the swimming pool, the Pool Bar is sheltered beneath an overhead garden and offers a relaxed setting for refreshments throughout the day. Further below, the Ol Murrani Bar occupies a separate structure beside an open-air campfire area. Its warm, informal character, sports television and pool table make it a natural hub for unwinding after a day on safari.

Wildlife from the Terrace

The expansive timber deck at Ol Murrani offers an unexpected opportunity to observe some of the Mara’s nocturnal visitors. Hyenas, mongooses and honey badgers regularly gather nearby when meat is placed out in the evening, bringing the surrounding wilderness remarkably close to the lodge.

Dining with a Sense of Place

The circular dining room echoes the design of the lounge, centred around a dramatic fireplace with a soaring chimney. Pastel-toned walls complement exquisite natural-stone-framed paintings depicting scenes of everyday Maasai life, adding an authentic sense of place.

Generously presented buffet stations offer an abundant selection of garden-fresh salads, hearty main courses and live cooking stations, followed by an indulgent array of desserts and a choice of cheeses. Dining at Masai Mara Sopa Lodge is as much about the atmosphere and setting as it is about the food, bringing guests together around the flavours and traditions of Kenya.
